I’m a huge coffee lover, and while I’ve been traveling through California this year, I’ve definitely noticed that some cities and towns have a much better coffee scene than others.

I spent three days in Morro Bay, and looking back, I was actually pretty surprised by how many cute and quirky cafes and coffee shops I found here. There were plenty of places that were perfect for a quick bite in the morning or just sitting down with a good iced latte and taking it easy for a while.

I know it can be a little harder to find the good cafes in Morro Bay compared to some of the bigger and more popular cities in California, which is why I decided to put together this guide on the best cafes and coffee shops in Morro Bay, California.

That way, you don’t have to spend half your morning driving around looking for a good cup of coffee like I did!

What are the Best Coffee Shops & Cafes in Morro Bay? My Experience

When I’m traveling, I’m kinda always on the hunt for a good cup of coffee, and that hunt begins in every new destination, every city, every morning. It’s basically become part of my routine!

In some cities, like Santa Barbara for instance, that was super easy because there are about 10,000 awesome coffee shops to choose from. It was a little harder here in Morro Bay, but I still managed to find a few places that I really liked.

When it comes to coffee, I do love a good cappuccino or latte, so basically just a regular specialty coffee. I’m also perfectly happy with some good old American drip coffee with a little cream or milk. I’m not really a huge fan of cold foam or all those super sweet and creamy coffee drinks, so I’m just saying that so you know what type of cafes I’ll be mentioning on this list.

For specialty coffee, I think by far, and honestly, it’s not even close, the best coffee shop in Morro Bay is Scout Coffee. Their lattes and cappuccinos are fantastic, and they also have some really delicious pastries and cookies. I actually also went to their location in San Luis Obispo and had a great experience there too, so definitely check that one out if you’re heading that way.

And then my other favorite place I found in Morro Bay was actually High Tide Deli. They also make really good coffee, including lattes and regular drip coffee, but the real highlight for me here was the food. Their sandwiches were awesome, and they also have acai bowls, which made for a really good and slightly healthier breakfast.

Number one on my list just has to be Scout Coffee in Morro Bay. It’s just the perfect coffee shop.

I came here on my very first morning in Morro Bay, and I couldn’t have been happier to start the day with a perfect latte. They also do regular filter coffee as well as flavored iced lattes, so there’s definitely something for everyone.

The location itself is fairly simple but cozy, but the highlight for me was for sure their in-house bakery. They make all their pastries right there, and they’re so damn delicious. I can only recommend trying their croissants!

My favorite place in Morro Bay for a good, healthy breakfast was definitely High Tide.

The place itself is super cute and fairly small, but they have loads of seating outside, so I’d recommend coming on a good-weather day if you can.

And when it comes to the food, I was in heaven. Let’s quickly start with the coffee: I had an iced latte here, and it was really good. Nothing crazy, but definitely solid and it hit the spot.

But the food here? Wow. Their sandwiches are absolutely loaded and so delicious, and their acai bowls are just so yummy. We tried both when we were here. We had their Pro Bowl with banana and peanut butter, which was so, so good, and then we also tried their Italian sandwich.

3. The Nautical Bean

As much as I love a good espresso, I also really do like a simple American brewed coffee and a good, filling breakfast. And for that, I think The Nautical Bean is one of the best options.

We came here on the morning we left Morro Bay because it was quick, easy, delicious and just hit the spot. So I’d definitely recommend this place for a morning when you need to get going and don’t want to spend forever sitting around at breakfast.

We had two regular coffees with milk, which were cheap enough, and then we also had their bagels. Apparently, they also have really good breakfast burritos, but we didn’t get a chance to try one of those.

4. Sun-N-Buns Bakery

Sun-N-Buns Bakery is kinda your classic old-school coffee shop in a seaside town.

We only stopped by for a quick coffee and a little snack, and their coffee is classic drip coffee, which was pretty good. But when it comes to food, they have all sorts of fun things going on.

They have loads of pastries and cookies, but they also do ice cream and even hot dogs. I know, it sounds like there’s a lot going on, but honestly, it all looked super yummy, so it’s definitely worth checking out.

It’s also located right by the waterfront, so if you’re going on one of the whale-watching tours, this is a great place to pick up some coffee and breakfast in the morning before you head out.

5. Rudie’s Rock Espresso

Last on the list is Rudie’s Rock Espresso, which I actually didn’t get to try myself. Such a shame!

A girl working at the reception at my hotel recommended it to me, and I looked it up afterward and thought it actually looked awesome. It has a cute little courtyard where you can sit, they do some delicious-looking coffee, and their breakfast wraps and burritos look really good too.

So if you end up checking it out, definitely let me know how it is! I didn’t get to experience it myself, but based on the photos and the recommendation I got, it looks like a really cool little cafe.

My favorite activity in Morro Bay was definitely whale watching, which you can do year-round. But even just spotting the cute little otters and sea lions around the harbor is a fun thing to do while you’re here.

All in all, Morro Bay has a really good cafe and breakfast scene. Since I personally love good specialty coffee, I do think Scout Coffee is by far the best coffee shop in town. But I also appreciate a simple black coffee with a breakfast burrito, and for that, apparently Rudie’s Rock Espresso is amazing.

Of course, there are more places to have breakfast in Morro Bay. There are plenty of diners and other sit-down restaurants around town, but the ones on this list are the places I actually tried and liked a lot.
