Mini Guide: Where to See Sea Lions & Otters in Morro Bay 2026

One of the biggest reasons people come to Morro Bay, and one of the things I ended up loving the most, is the awesome wildlife here. And that mainly means sea otters and sea lions (Oh and whales of course!).

I just spent 3 days in Morro Bay, and pretty much every day I got to see plenty of them. They live right here in the bay, so you have a really good chance of seeing them while you’re visiting. You just kind of need to know where to look.

And heads up: they’re ridiculously cute.

So, to save you from running around Morro Bay aimlessly trying to find them, I figured I’d put together this little guide on where to see sea lions and otters in Morro Bay, including the exact locations we had the best luck at. I honestly wish someone had done this for me before I visited!

Sea Lions and Otters in Morro Bay – My Experience

I visited Morro Bay as part of a 1-month road trip through California, where I drove from San Francisco down Highway 1, through Morro Bay, and all the way to San Diego. As part of that trip, I spent about 3 days in Morro Bay.

When it comes to seeing the sea lions and otters here, it’s really not some big secret. You’ll most likely be able to see them somewhere around the bay, especially if you’re walking along the water south of Morro Rock.

However, after wandering around aimlessly for a while, I eventually figured out that there are a few designated spots where they usually hang out, which makes finding them a whole lot easier.

The otters usually hang out in groups. Every now and then you’ll see a single one heading off to do its own thing, but most of the time, there were several together, which actually made them pretty easy to spot once I knew where to look.

The same goes for the sea lions. They usually hang out together on a platform in the bay, and honestly, I’m pretty sure you’ll hear them before you see them anyway. Those guys are LOUD!

So, while you can definitely just walk around the waterfront and keep your eyes open, I’d recommend heading to the specific locations I’ve listed below. It’ll save you from doing what I did and wandering around the bay wondering where the hell all the otters are.

Where to See Otters in Morro Bay

1. Morro Bay T Pier

The otters looooove to play around the pier here, and from my experience, this was probably the best spot to get a really close look at them. They like hanging out right below the pier, so we got some really good views of them, especially when they were playing around down there. They were so freaking adorable!

I also wondered if they sometimes come here looking for food since there are so many fishing boats around, but either way, this was definitely a popular spot for people trying to see them.

I do think your chances of seeing them here are probably a little slimmer than at some of the other spots, but when you do see them, they’re super close, which makes it totally worth checking out.

And honestly, the pier is a beautiful place to hang out anyway, with some pretty stunning views over Morro Rock.

2. Sea Otter Heaven

The second place is one that’s literally just called Sea Otter Heaven on Google Maps.

We actually walked here because we were planning on walking out to Morro Rock anyway, and I highly recommend doing that walk yourself because the views are beautiful.

Right by the rock, you’ll find this little area called Sea Otter Heaven. There really isn’t anything particularly special about the place itself. It’s basically just a section of the waterfront, but for whatever reason, this is where the otters seem to hang out quite a bit.

This is also where we saw them in a huge group, all just floating around and napping on their backs. It was honestly one of the cutest things I saw in Morro Bay, and I could’ve stood there watching them for ages.

Where to See Sea Lions in Morro Bay

1. Giovanni’s Fish Market

For us, the pier right outside Giovanni’s Fish Market worked really well. Giovanni’s is also an amazing seafood restaurant, and the calamari and popcorn shrimp are to die for. Seriously, the popcorn shrimp might have been the best I’ve ever had.

Anyways, right outside the restaurant, we saw a few sea lions just hanging out in the water and along the shore, which was super cool. I’m not sure if this is a guaranteed spot to see them, but we were here on all 3 days of our trip and saw sea lions hanging out around here every single time.

So, it’s definitely worth stopping by, whether you’re here to see the sea lions or just to get some really good seafood.

2. Sea Lion Dock

The Sea Lion Dock in Morro Bay is basically their home, I guess. It’s kind of similar to Pier 39 in San Francisco, just a lot smaller. It’s a big floating platform out in the water where all the sea lions sunbathe, sleep, and just hang out all day.

It’s a little farther out in the bay, but you can still see them pretty well from the waterfront promenade along the Embarcadero. There are even some binoculars around the waterfront that you can use for free, which makes getting a closer look at them a lot easier.

And honestly, you’ll probably hear them before you even manage to spot them. Those guys are LOUD!

Rent a SUP or Kayak in Morro Bay

Alternatively, you can also rent a kayak or paddleboard and get out onto the water yourself. There are quite a few rental places around Morro Bay, including Morro Bay Paddleboard and A Kayak Shack.

Both offer regular rentals as well as guided tours, so either way, you’ll get to see the wildlife from much closer, which sounds pretty awesome to me. I didn’t actually do this myself, but I definitely would’ve enjoyed it.

If you do decide to head out onto the water on your own, just remember that these are wild animals, so give them plenty of space and be respectful of them. They’re cute as hell, but they’re still wild animals!

Is Morro Bay Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! I had a great couple of days here, and between the amazing seafood and getting to see all the sea lions and otters, it was such a beautiful and relaxing little getaway.

Is Morro Bay Expensive to Visit?

Not at all, at least not compared to some of the other places in California like Santa Barbara or Los Angeles. We spent well under $100 per night on our hotel, and food and activities were also pretty affordable.

Where Can I See the Otters in Morro Bay?

There are a couple of good places to spot them, but my favorite was definitely Morro Bay T Pier. It’s right on the waterfront, and if you get lucky, you can get a really close look at them playing around in the water.

Is There Whale Watching in Morro Bay?

Absolutely! There are plenty of whale-watching tours in Morro Bay, and one of the coolest things is that you can go whale watching year-round. Depending on when you visit, you’ll have the chance to see different types of whales.

All in all, seeing the otters in Morro Bay is such a cute and fun little thing to do, and I really enjoyed it myself.

I can also imagine this being an awesome family activity. If you’re traveling with kids and they get to see sea otters and sea lions up close, maybe go kayaking around the bay, and then finish it off with a whale-watching tour, I’m pretty sure they’ll absolutely love it.
