Where to Stay in San Luis Obispo California: My Top Hotels & Areas in 2026

I just got back from an amazing weekend in San Luis Obispo, and I stayed at one of the cutest hotels I’ve been to in a very long time.

I spent pretty much the entire weekend wandering around the historic center of SLO, grabbing coffee, checking out little shops and restaurants, and just enjoying the town. Being able to do all of that on foot made such a difference! I stayed at the Garden Street Inn, which is right in the middle of the historic center and ended up being the perfect base for my weekend.

From my own experience, I actually found choosing an area in San Luis Obispo pretty straightforward. I knew I wanted to be right in the center because that’s where most of the restaurants, cafes, bars and shops are, but choosing the actual hotel took me a little longer.

So I decided to put together this guide on where to stay in San Luis Obispo, including the best areas to stay as well as some of the cutest, most charming and occasionally slightly quirky hotels I came across during my research.

Where to Stay in San Luis Obispo? Where I Actually Stayed

Before coming to San Luis Obispo, I obviously did a fair bit of research because, as a travel blogger, I’m probably a little more picky than the average person when it comes to choosing a hotel.

I want somewhere that’s comfortable, but I also really like it when the hotel itself adds something to the experience.

The first thing that stood out to me was that the historic center of San Luis Obispo is basically the heart of the action. That immediately made my decision pretty easy because I love staying somewhere where I can walk out of the hotel and have restaurants, bars, cafes and shops right on my doorstep.

For that reason, we stayed at the Garden Street Inn, which is one of the cutest little B&Bs I’ve stayed at in a while. The building itself is gorgeous, and the location couldn’t have been better. It’s right in the historic town center and only about a two-minute walk from two of my favorite coffee shops in SLO, Scout Coffee and Linnaea’s Cafe.

We stayed in the Deluxe Queen room, which was surprisingly spacious, and the whole design made me feel like I was staying in some cute little B&B in Vermont or something. It had that cozy, slightly old-fashioned feeling that I really like in smaller boutique hotels, rather than feeling like you could be in any generic hotel room anywhere in the world.

The breakfast was also really good. I usually love going out for breakfast and trying different cafes when I travel, but the food here was good enough that I actually wanted to eat breakfast at the hotel, which says quite a lot coming from me.

We came to San Luis Obispo for a romantic couples getaway, and for that kind of trip, the Garden Street Inn was pretty much perfect. The whole place has a really cozy and romantic atmosphere, and being able to walk straight out into the historic center made the weekend feel incredibly easy.

If you’re looking for something a little less B&B-style, though, I’d also take a look at the Granada Hotel or Hotel Cerro. Both are right downtown and would give you that same convenient location while offering a slightly different experience.

The Best Areas to Stay in San Luis Obispo

Downtown SLO

Downtown SLO was for sure my favorite area to stay in San Luis Obispo.

The historic center is basically the heart of San Luis Obispo, and I loved being right in the middle of it. I barely used my car the entire weekend because I could just walk pretty much everywhere I wanted to go. I’d walk out for coffee in the morning, walk over to the mission, and then head out on foot again in the evening for dinner or drinks.

It just made the whole weekend feel incredibly easy, and I really loved being able to explore the town without constantly getting in the car. So if you’re visiting SLO for the first time and want that cute little historic-town experience, this is definitely where I’d stay.

Avila Beach

Avila Beach is technically part of San Luis Obispo County rather than the town of San Luis Obispo itself, and it’s located right on the coast, about a 20-minute drive from SLO.

I came down here a couple of times during my trip because the coastline and beach are really beautiful, and there are also some fun family-friendly things to do around here, including Avila Valley Barn.

Obviously, staying here would give you a completely different experience from staying in downtown SLO. You’d be trading the historic town center for a little California beach town, which could be what you’re looking for if being by the ocean is more important to you.

Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach is probably the most well-known beachfront town in San Luis Obispo County, and it’s also only about a 20-minute drive from San Luis Obispo.

But staying here and staying in SLO are also two very different experiences.

Pismo Beach is very much a classic California seaside town, whereas it doesn’t really have the same cute historic atmosphere that you get in downtown San Luis Obispo. So I think this one really comes down to what kind of trip you want.

Do you want a beach vacation, where you can wake up by the ocean and spend your days at the beach? Or do you want a cute little historic-town getaway, where you can walk around old buildings, cafes, shops and restaurants?

Edna Valley

And then, of course, you always have the option of staying out in Edna Valley, which is the wine region just outside San Luis Obispo.

I visited quite a few vineyards here and did a bunch of wine tastings, and I had such a great time. I didn’t actually stay in Edna Valley myself, but honestly, I really want to next time.

I’m already planning my trip back to the area, and when I do, I’m pretty sure I’m going to stay at La Lomita Ranch, which looks absolutely incredible.

My Top 5 Hotels in San Luis Obispo

1. Granada Hotel & Bistro // Best Boutique Hotel in SLO

The hotel I actually wanted to book for my own weekend trip to San Luis Obispo was the Granada Hotel & Bistro, but unfortunately, it was fully booked for the dates I was visiting.

Regardless, it’s definitely one of the coolest little boutique hotels in SLO. It’s in a gorgeous red-brick building right in the historic center, so the location is fantastic, and the whole place has a really cozy atmosphere.

There’s also a lively bar here, which I really like because if you’re planning on going out for dinner, having a few drinks and just enjoying a fun weekend in SLO, it feels like the kind of hotel where you can actually hang out and have a good time rather than just coming back to sleep.

2. La Lomita Ranch // Best Winery in San Luis Obispo

The hotel I already have my eyes on for my next trip to San Luis Obispo is La Lomita Ranch.

I’ve actually been here before, but not as a hotel guest. We came here for a wine tasting since La Lomita is also a winery, and we had such a great time. While we were there, I found out that they also have rooms and that you can actually stay on the ranch.

And I immediately thought, okay, I have to stay here!

3. Garden Street Inn SLO // This is Where I Actually Stayed

The Garden Street Inn is where I actually ended up staying, and it couldn’t have been more perfect for our weekend.

If you’re looking for a romantic couples getaway in a central location, I really don’t think it gets much better than this. It’s easily one of the cutest little B&Bs I’ve stayed at in a while, and the whole place has this really cozy, old-school feeling.

The design and traditional decor honestly made me feel like I was staying somewhere in Vermont, which I absolutely loved. It felt completely different from a standard hotel, and the fact that we could walk straight out into the historic center made the whole experience even better.

The breakfast was also delicious, which is saying something because I usually love going out and trying different cafes for breakfast when I travel.

4. Petit Soleil

Petit Soleil is probably the most unique hotel on this list, and the second I saw it, I was immediately transported back to the French Riviera.

The whole place has this really charming French-inspired design, and it looks like it could belong somewhere along the Mediterranean coast rather than in San Luis Obispo. The rooms are cozy, really well designed, and the whole hotel just has a very different feel from some of the more traditional California hotels around here.

It’s definitely a little more quirky and unusual, but I actually love that. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels a little different and has some personality to it, I think Petit Soleil would be a really fun choice for a weekend in SLO.

5. Pacific Point Resort

And now let’s step away from downtown San Luis Obispo and head over to the coast.

Whenever I think of beach towns and seaside getaways, I immediately think of resorts, so if you decide to stay around Pismo Beach, this is the kind of place I’d be looking at: Pacific Point Resort.

This resort is set right on top of the cliffs overlooking the ocean, and the views are honestly ridiculous. You’ve got the Pacific Ocean right in front of you, and there’s even a pool overlooking the water, so it definitely has that proper California beach-resort feeling.

The rooms also look really spacious and modern, with modern decor and plenty of room to actually relax.

But here’s the part that surprised me: this is actually the cheapest hotel on my entire list.

Crazy, right?

Depending on when you visit, you can apparently get a room here for around $200 per night, which I think is pretty incredible considering the location and the ocean views you’re getting.

What Is the Best Hotel in San Luis Obispo?

For staying downtown, my favorite is definitely the Garden Street Inn. That’s where I stayed, and I loved being right in the middle of the historic center.

If you’d rather stay by the ocean, though, I’d definitely take a look at Pacific Point Resort, especially because the ocean views are pretty incredible.

Is San Luis Obispo Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! San Luis Obispo was one of my favorite destinations in California. You’ve got a super cute historic town center, some amazing wineries, and then some really beautiful beach towns like Avila Beach and Pismo Beach all within about 20 minutes.

Is San Luis Obispo Expensive to Visit?

Surprisingly, yes. I honestly didn’t expect prices in SLO to be anywhere near what I saw in Santa Barbara, but especially when it came to accommodation, it was definitely pricier than I expected.

What Is There to Do in San Luis Obispo?

There are some incredible wineries and vineyards around San Luis Obispo where you can go wine tasting, but we also really enjoyed exploring the historic town center and visiting landmarks like Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

And if you have a car, there are plenty of other things to do around the area, from visiting the nearby beaches to exploring more of the wine country.

What Is the Best Luxury Hotel in San Luis Obispo?

If you want something a little more upscale and don’t mind staying outside downtown, I’d definitely look at Pacific Point Resort. It’s set right on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, so the views are incredible, and considering what you get, I actually thought it was pretty good value for money.

Final Thoughts on Where Should I Stay in San Luis Obispo?

I really enjoyed staying in downtown San Luis Obispo. I think part of that is because I’m so used to walkable European cities, so being able to leave the hotel and just walk wherever I needed to go was something I appreciated a lot.

From the Garden Street Inn, I could walk to my favorite coffee shops in the morning, wander around the historic center during the day, and head out for dinner or drinks in the evening without ever needing to get in the car. For a weekend trip, that was pretty much perfect.

But if I’m being honest, I think I’d do things a little differently next time.

Now that I’ve seen a bit more of the area, I’d probably want something a little more unique and a little quieter. La Lomita Ranch and Pacific Point Resort are both high on my list, and I could honestly see myself doing two nights at each for a completely different kind of weekend.

So, I think it really comes down to what you want from your trip. If you want to explore SLO, walk everywhere and have restaurants and cafes right outside your door, stay downtown. But if you want to slow things down a little and make the hotel part of the experience, I’d look at some of the options outside the city center.
