My Review: Is the Alhambra in Granada Worth Visiting? 2026

As you might already know, I did a huge road trip last summer through most of Southern Spain and visited many landmarks and cities. If I had to put together a top three of the places I’ve visited, the Alhambra in Granada is definitely in that top 3.

In case you don’t really know what’s going on there, the Alhambra is a beautiful Moorish fortress and palace complex built hundreds of years ago by the Muslims who ruled over Andalusia.

Needless to say, I had to visit it while I was in Granada. I spent almost the majority of the day there, parts of it wandering around on my own, but then also with a guide, which was really helpful for explaining more about the history.

Today I’m putting together this little guide to answer the question: “Is the Alhambra in Granada worth visiting?” I’ll make sure to include loads of helpful tips and information that will be useful for your next visit.

Is the Alhambra in Granada Worth Visiting – My Quick Answer

To keep things simple here in case you don’t want to read through this whole article, my quick answer is: duh, it is 100% worth visiting. 

The Alhambra is one of the most impressive fortresses I have ever visited, and the detail and architecture there is honestly mind-blowing and so beautiful.

I definitely think it is a must-visit when you are in Spain. However, a few quick things I want to say are to make sure you book your tickets early since they absolutely book out, and I also recommend getting a guide for your time there since otherwise you’re basically just wandering around aimlessly. And the last quick thing, make sure to get tickets for the Nasrid Palaces within the Alhambra, otherwise you’re good to go.

What is the Alhambra in Granada?

I’ll do my best explaining what the Alhambra in Granada is! I mean, I didn’t get a tour guide to explain all about the history and culture for no reason, right?

Essentially, the Alhambra is one of the largest fortress and palace complexes ever built in Andalusia. It was constructed by the Nasrid Dynasty, which was the last Muslim dynasty to rule over the south of Spain. They established the complex on a strategic hill overlooking Granada back in 1238, which is exactly where that unique architecture with all the beautiful horseshoe gates and carved details comes from.

Instead of being just one single building, it was actually a completely self-contained, fortified citadel with its own military barracks, royal palaces, and gardens. 

When the Christian monarchs took over in 1492, they loved it so much that they moved right in instead of tearing it down, which is why you see a super cool mix of both Islamic art and Spanish Renaissance palaces standing right next to each other today.

Joining a Guided Tour in the Alhambra

I personally joined a guided tour to explore the Alhambra, which actually happened out of necessity. All the standard general admission tickets were completely booked out, so I had to book a tour that had tickets included, but more on that workaround later.

Honestly, I am so glad I ended up booking a guided tour. Our guide was amazing and led us through the entire Alhambra, including the Nasrid Palaces. He explained everything super  well, from the deep history of how and when it was built to a lot of cool insights about the architecture and the stunning details hidden in the palaces. He was very passionate about it which I thought was fantastic.

I have of course done all types of sightseeing tours in my life, but I liked this one a lot because of the way it was done. We all got a little wireless headset, and our tour guide had a microphone and would basically talk straight into our ears. That way, I could always hear him clearly, even if I wanted to wander off a little bit to take pictures or explore on my own, which was really helpful. 

The tour itself was 2.5 hours long, but since it included a full ticket, I was allowed to stay inside, wander around, and explore on my own after the guide was finished. This was great because there were a few more photos I wanted to grab that I didn’t get the chance to take during the active tour, so I could just loop back afterward.

Tips for Visiting the Alhambra

To help you plan the perfect visit and avoid the same stresses I dealt with, here are my top tips for visiting the Alhambra:

1. Buy tickets early

I have mentioned this a few times, but it is literally the most important thing I can tell you: book your tickets well in advance. I waited way too long to book mine and really struggled to find a way in. I recommend booking them basically as soon as you lock in your flights and hotels, because these tickets sell out months ahead of time.

2. Book the correct timeslot for the Nasrid Palaces

This part trips a lot of people up because it can be confusing when you’re booking. The general admission ticket lets you enter the main Alhambra grounds pretty much all day, but entry to the Nasrid Palaces, which is the absolute highlight section inside the complex, requires a strict, specific timeslot. 

Our slot wasn’t until 4:00 PM, so we entered the main Alhambra grounds at around 2:00 PM, spent two hours exploring the gardens and fort, and then lined up for the palaces right at 4:00 PM. Just keep an eye on your palace time so you don’t arrive way too early and end up waiting around all day.

3. Get a guide if you want to learn something

We booked a guided tour, and it was honestly amazing. Our guide stayed with us for about 3 hours and explained so many things about the history and the architecture, stuff I would have never known otherwise since there aren’t really plaques or signs to read on your own inside the buildings.

4. Bring your passport

Do not forget your physical passport! You absolutely need it to enter the Alhambra, and they do check it at the gates. We packed our day bags the night before with snacks and water, and made sure our passports were tucked safely inside so we wouldn’t forget them in the morning rush.

5. The Best Time to Visit the Alhambra

I think the best time to visit the Alhambra is definitely during the shoulder season or off-season, like March or April. The main reason is the weather. I visited in the summer and was sweating my balls off in there because it gets incredibly hot. If you do end up visiting during the summer months, I highly recommend booking the earliest morning timeslot available so you can escape the worst of the midday heat.

6. Where to Stay Close to the Alhambra

From my own experience, Granada is a fairly walkable city, but I say that as someone who is used to walking a ton when I travel. If you want to make things easier on your legs and stay close to the action, I highly recommend checking out Palacio de Mariana Pineda. It is a super cute, affordable boutique hotel located close to the Alhambra.

Highlights within the Alhambra Granada

The Alhambra is a huge complex of palaces, fortresses, and other historic buildings. When I was there, I literally spent hours and hours wandering around and exploring. After experiencing it all, I can definitely say my two absolute favorites are the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife Gardens.

Nasrid Palaces

As I mentioned earlier, the Nasrid Palaces were my number one highlight but honestly, they are everyone’s highlight, which is why you have to get separate tickets with a specific timeslot through the official website (otherwise there would be too many people in there at the same time)

The Nasrid Palaces are basically what everyone pictures when they think of the Alhambra. It’s where you’ll find all the super cool, iconic courtyards with reflecting ponds, surrounded by those beautiful  intricate stone carvings all over the walls and ceilings. It is for sure some of the most impressive architecture I have ever seen in my life, and it is definitely worth adding a visit to your itinerary just for this.

Generalife Gardens

The Generalife Gardens are just so beautiful too. They are basically filled with long reflecting pools, fountains, loads of lemon trees, and colorful flowers, and everything is kept super well taken care of.

That is definitely something I noticed here, but also in many other cities I’ve visited throughout Spain, that the Spanish do gardens really well! All the gardens I have seen throughout Spain are always so well designed and maintained.

I found Granada super accessible and easy to navigate. I walked pretty much the entire time and didn’t have to touch my car once. If you want a specific hotel recommendation, I highly suggest staying at the Palacio de Santa Inés (formerly Palacio de Mariana Pineda). That’s where I stayed, and it was super close to the Alhambra, which I loved.

Is Granada worth visiting?

Absolutely! I thought Granada was well worth the trip. In fact, it was one of my absolute favorite places I visited in all of Spain. I spent three full days there and loved every minute of it, especially since there is so much more to do in the city than just visiting the Alhambra.

Is the Alhambra worth it?

Without a doubt yes 100%. Out of all the major sights I have visited across Spain and yes, I am including massive highlights in Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona in this, I think the Alhambra might actually be my number one choice. I honestly feel like it doesn’t get enough attention for how incredible it is!

How to get to Granada?

Transportation in Spain is amazing. If you’ve been following along, you know I went on a huge road trip around the country where I drove for the first half and used their train network for the second half. Either driving yourself or taking the train to Granada from major hubs like Madrid, Seville, or Malaga works incredibly well.

Final Thoughts: Is the Alhambra in Granada Really Worth It?

I have visited so many different sights, from palaces and cathedrals to massive fortresses all throughout Spain, including Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. Honestly, I think I can safely say that the Alhambra might be my absolute favorite out of all of them. It is just so wildly impressive, and because I hadn’t really seen this specific type of Moorish architecture before, I was completely blown away by the detail.

Yes, it is a little costly, and yes, it can definitely be a hassle to secure your tickets in advance. However, it is totally worth the effort. Whenever you plan your next trip to the south of Spain, I highly recommend adding Granada and the Alhambra to your itinerary.
