Things to Do in Setenil de Las Bodegas – My Quick Answer

So, as you know, I am all about honesty here on my travel blog, but I also want to be helpful at the same time. I’m going to give you the best things I did here in Setenil de las Bodegas, but I really want to adjust your expectations a little bit first.

I think the main thing to do in Setenil de las Bodegas is honestly just wandering around, enjoying the beautiful and truly unique architecture, and taking pictures of it. I’m not hating on it at all, I really think it looks so cool here, but I also want to be honest and say that’s kind of it, and there isn’t much more to it.

Please don’t expect a bunch of activities that will fill an entire day; instead, Setenil de las Bodegas is the activity. Wandering around and taking pictures is the main event here, and that was totally okay with me!

I also want to add that I personally arrived in the afternoon, unfortunately at the same time as many of the big bus tours. With so many people arriving at once, it felt a little like a tourist trap to me, which was a bit of a bummer.

However, I’m sure I would have had a very different experience if I’d arrived early in the morning! Again, I don’t want to be all negative about it, I’m just trying to be honest and helpful so you can plan your trip better than I did.

My Tips for Visiting Setenil de Las Bodegas

Stay in Ronda and do a day trip to Setenil

If you are planning on visiting Setenil de las Bodegas, I personally would not stay in Setenil itself, it just doesn’t really make sense. I would stay in Ronda instead, which is my number one favorite village in the South of Spain! Ronda has way more to do and see. From there, you can easily rent a car and do a day trip; it’s only a short 20-minute drive from Ronda to Setenil.

Arrive Early in the morning for the best pictures

I mentioned this already, but it’s worth repeating: I arrived here in the afternoon at the same time as many of the bus tours, and honestly, that did impact my experience a little. If I were to go again, I would make sure to arrive as early as I can. That way, you can actually explore the small alleyways in peace and get some cool pictures without a hundred other people in them!

There is free parking in Setenil de las Bodegas

There is free parking in Setenil, and you should definitely use it. Whenever I drive anywhere in Spain, I always pick a parking spot beforehand and have Google Maps take me directly there. I never want to risk accidentally driving into a town center and suddenly getting stuck in the smallest cobblestone alleys! This is where I parked, and it was only a 5-minute walk from the town center.

Don’t eat at the touristy restaurants

The main reason I think Setenil is borderline “tourist trap” territory is the large amount of touristy restaurants on the main road, Calle Cuevas del Sol. They tend to be mediocre and overpriced. Please do yourself a favor and don’t eat there; you’ll find that the food in Ronda is much better!

My Top Things to Do in Setenil

1. Walk the Calle Cuevas del Sol

The number one thing we did, of course, was walking down the famous Calle Cuevas del Sol, which I think is the absolute highlight here.

This is the iconic street with the massive cliff hanging overhead and whitewashed buildings built directly into the rock wall. There are loads of restaurants and shops along here, and I even popped into one of the shops to see the inside and it actually had the raw cliff as the ceiling and back wall! It was super weird to see, but obviously so cool and unique.

This is definitely one of the best spots for pictures, but again, I recommend you come here early if you want a shot with no people in it. The only downside is that most of the restaurants here are mediocre and way overpriced, so I personally wouldn’t eat a full meal here.

2. Get a Glass of Wine at D’Tapas

My favorite spot in Setenil was actually this small little wine bar called D’Tapas. No one else was there when we went, which I thought was weird because it has a super cute terrace right on the river in the center of town. It was really affordable, and we had some tapas and cheese with a glass of white wine. It offered perfect views of the cliffs, so I definitely recommend coming here for a little break to soak in the atmosphere without the “touristy” stress.

3. Walk the Cuevas de la Sombra

Opposite the Cuevas del Sol is probably the second most famous street in Setenil, and that’s Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, which is also built directly into the cliff. I personally preferred this side of town just because it felt a little less touristy, and the restaurants and shops here seemed a bit more honest.

For example, there was a little ham shop called La Cueva del Ibérico that I really wanted to go to but didn’t have time for. It’s basically a deli shop where they put a cheese and ham board together for you, and you can grab a bottle of wine, all for a super affordable price, to enjoy right outside their shop in the middle of town. I enjoy that so much more than going to any tourist restaurant!

4. Head to the Carmen Viewpoint (Mirador del Carmen)

One of the best viewpoints in Setenil de las Bodegas is the Mirador del Carmen, which offers some amazing views over the town and even has the famous “Setenil” sign.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a “must-see” in the sense that if you aren’t in the shape or the mood to walk up there, you definitely don’t have to, but I thought it was a fun walk and worth the little detour for the perspective it gives you over the white houses.

5. Get a Pastry from Trotamundos

I definitely have a bit of a sweet tooth and I do love a good pastry! I’ve had so many amazing baked goods in Spain, and one I highly recommend here in Setenil is Trotamundos, which is famous for its sweet treats.

I’ll be honest, I can’t remember the names of everything I bought, but I had a whole bag full of pastries and a coffee for only 8€! I shared it with my family and it was all super yummy, the perfect afternoon snack.

6. Walk Calle Herrería

Calle Herrería is another super famous street in Setenil de las Bodegas. It’s much smaller and more narrow than the others, and it winds up the stairs between the whitewashed buildings.

It’s one of the most famous photo spots in town, but honestly, that’s really all it is, a cool street that’s perfect for a picture. Because it was so busy and there was a literal line to take a photo when I was there, I didn’t bother waiting, which is why I sadly don’t have a picture of it to show you!

7. Explore the Andalusia Square (Plaza de Andalucía)

Lastly, the Plaza de Andalucía is worth walking up to as well. Where we parked, we arrived at the bottom of Setenil, so we actually almost missed this part of town! When you’re wandering down Calle Cuevas del Sol, it seems at first like the town ends there, but there is a whole other section of Setenil away from the cliffs.

This area has more restaurants, the town hall, and the official tourism office, so it’s basically the official town center. If you are planning on staying in Setenil or want a proper lunch, I would check out the places around here since it’s just much less busy.

I am definitely a little hesitant when it comes to Setenil since I think the experience can be a bit hit-or-miss. However, I would say yes, it is worth visiting! Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful and incredibly unique little village.

I would say Setenil itself is the main attraction here! With its streets and houses built directly into the cliff, it’s really fun exploring, wandering around, and taking a bunch of photos.

Yes, there is! Just outside of the city center, there is a pretty big parking lot which is completely free. From there, it only took us about 5 minutes to walk into the center of town.

Final Thoughts on Best Activities in Setenil de las Bodegas

As far as all these things to do in Setenil go, you can probably already tell that they aren’t major, time-consuming activities. Most of the things to do in Setenil involve wandering around, exploring on foot, eating some food, and taking pictures, which is exactly what I explained at the very beginning of this article!

I definitely think Setenil de las Bodegas is worth visiting and there are fun things to do here, but I also want to make sure I set your expectations right. If you are visiting, I would maybe only plan for about 2 hours here, maybe 3 if you are sitting down for some lunch, but that’s really it.

This is why I would always suggest combining it with either a visit to Ronda or a visit to La Melonera, which is an amazing winery nearby.

I hope this little guide on the best things to do in Setenil de las Bodegas helps you out a little when planning your next trip!
